How do I know if I need therapy?

If you are experiencing emotional challenges, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship conflicts, or past trauma that is affecting your daily life, therapy can help. Whether you are dealing with current issues or unresolved experiences from the past, counseling provides a supportive space to work through them. Many people in St. Louis seek therapy to improve their emotional well-being, strengthen relationships, and achieve personal goals. If you are unsure, reaching out to a local St. Louis therapist is a great first step toward understanding if therapy is right for you.

How long are therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions typically last 45 to 50 minutes unless otherwise indicated by your therapist.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, Foundations for Change accepts many insurance plans for counseling services in St. Louis. We currently accept HealthLink, Cigna, Aetna, Anthem BCBS, United Healthcare, UMR, MO HealthNet (Missouri Medicaid), Home State Health (Cenpatico), Ambetter, and United Healthcare Community Plan. If your insurance is not listed, you may still be able to receive out-of-network reimbursement. We are also working to add more insurance options. A sliding fee scale is available based on financial need. Please contact our St. Louis office to verify your coverage or to learn more about payment options.

What can I expect in my first session?

At your first counseling session at Foundations for Change in St. Louis, your therapist will focus on getting to know you and understanding your reasons for seeking therapy. You will be asked about any symptoms you are experiencing, as well as your personal history, which may include education, relationships, living situation, and work life. If you are bringing your child for therapy, the first session may include time with both you and your child, followed by individual time with your child. Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and are scheduled weekly or biweekly, depending on your needs. This first meeting helps create a comfortable space to begin your therapy journey in St. Louis.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

You may want to consider therapy for your child if they are showing signs of behavioral issues, such as aggression, defiance, school suspensions, or trouble with the law. Counseling can also help children in St. Louis who are coping with difficult life events, including divorce, grief, loss, abuse, or major changes at home or school. If your child’s emotions or behavior are affecting their well-being or relationships, a local St. Louis child therapist can provide support and guidance to help them navigate these challenges.

How frequent are therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions are typically once per week, but may be more or less depending on your individual needs.

What is the private pay cost per session?

Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker:  $150.00 per session
Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor: $100.00 per session
Graduate Level Counseling Practicum/Intern:  $30 or no cost per session

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of therapy varies for each person. At Foundations for Change in St. Louis, therapy is an ongoing process that you and your therapist will regularly discuss throughout your sessions. When both you and your therapist feel you have made meaningful progress and are ready, you will create a plan to conclude therapy. It is common for clients to return from time to time for additional support during life changes or challenging periods. Whether you are looking for short-term counseling or ongoing therapy in St. Louis, we will work with you to meet your individual needs.
